In a documentary video filmed by BBC Africa and anchored by Nkechi Onyinyechi Ogbonna, the Neonatal Jaundice Screening, Treatment, and Kernicterus Prevention Program (Project Oscar – Light For Life) in Nigeria receives recognition. Launched on December 3, 2024, by Reckitt in partnership with the Wellbeing Foundation Africa (WBFA) and other sub-partners, including NEST360 and SCIDaR, this program seeks to raise awareness, improve early diagnosis, and ensure access to life-saving treatment for newborns at risk of neonatal jaundice and its most severe complication—kernicterus.
As part of the launch, the Reckitt and WBFA team visited the Cerebral Palsy Center in Lagos, founded by Nonye Nweke, where they witnessed the long-term effects of untreated neonatal jaundice in children. The visit highlighted the urgent need for early intervention, community education, and improved healthcare systems to prevent avoidable disabilities caused by kernicterus.
