On February 17, 2024, the Wellbeing Foundation Africa proudly participated in the launch of the Global Health Workforce Programme (GHWP) in Nigeria. During this event, we introduced our latest project in collaboration with the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM): an Advanced Emergency Obstetrics and Newborn Care (EmONC) competency-based curriculum designed for resident doctors in obstetrics and gynecology at the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN).
This partnership, funded by the UK Department of Health and Social Care, aims to improve the availability of quality advanced EmONC services in hospitals across the nation by strengthening the capacity of NPMCN. Our collaboration with LSTM focuses on engaging OBGYN students in postgraduate medical education. We are customizing training modules for revision courses and examination Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE), establishing Advanced EmONC Centres of Excellence in Abuja and Lagos, and ensuring these centres are sustainable for future postgraduate OBGYN courses. Additionally, we are committed to supporting the NPMCN in resident training, maintaining quality assurance, and conducting thorough evaluations of the program for maximum impact.
At the launch, WBFA Founder and President, H.E. Toyin Saraki, highlighted the vital importance of a well-trained and supported healthcare workforce in addressing diverse healthcare needs. By investing in continuous professional development and training, especially in critical areas like EmONC, we empower healthcare professionals with the necessary skills to provide timely and effective care, ultimately reducing maternal and neonatal mortality rates.
