On February 12, 2025, the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), Wellbeing Foundation Africa (WBFA), and key health partners came together in Abuja to celebrate the successful conclusion of the Global Health Workforce Programme (GHWP) 2024.
The Nigeria Sharing and Learning Event, led by Ducit Blue Solutions in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Health, brought together experts and institutions, including the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, World Health Organisation, Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, National Primary Health Care Development Agency, Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, and the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria. The event provided an opportunity to reflect on the programme’s achievements, share lessons learned, and discuss the future of healthcare in Nigeria.
At the heart of GHWP is a commitment to strengthening healthcare systems by investing in people and strengthening healthcare systems. Since its launch, the GHWP programme has supported 14 health partners across Nigeria, the UK, Ghana, and Kenya, and trained 2,577 health workers in clinical skills, leadership, education, and Gender Equality & Social Inclusion (GESI). These efforts are already making a difference—enhancing healthcare delivery and improving patient outcomes across the country.
One of the programme’s achievements is the collaboration between LSTM, WBFA, and the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN). Together, we have impacted 225 doctors and established two Centres of Excellence in Lagos and Abuja. These centers provide advanced training, reduce travel time for participants, and offer long-term solutions by embedding the Advanced Obstetrics Surgical Skills (AOSS) course into NPMCN’s postgraduate curriculum.
This training builds a sustainable healthcare system. By equipping midwives, doctors, and other frontline workers with advanced clinical skills and leadership training, GHWP is the Universal Health Coverage goal, laying a foundation for stronger, more resilient healthcare systems that can meet the needs of Nigeria’s growing population.
