As part of our commitment to improving maternal and neonatal health outcomes in Nigeria, the Wellbeing Foundation Africa welcomed the Maternity Foundation team to its Abuja office for a strategic engagement. The conversations focused on exploring collaborative pathways to strengthen Nigeria’s health workforce through the scale-up of the Safe Delivery App (SDA), an innovative digital training tool designed to empower frontline healthcare providers with critical skills, evidence-based knowledge, and practical guidance.
The Safe Delivery App, developed under the 10 Million Safer Births Initiative launched by UNFPA and the Maternity Foundation, is designed to support at least 10 million safer births in Sub-Saharan Africa by 2030. This module-led platform offers healthcare workers, particularly midwives and birth attendants, on-demand instruction in key areas of maternal and neonatal care. Its offline functionality and user-friendly design make it especially valuable in resource-limited settings, ensuring that critical skills can be applied at the point of care. By equipping healthcare workers with this kind of accessible, real-time knowledge, the app directly contributes to reducing preventable maternal and newborn deaths while improving overall quality of care.
At the Wellbeing Foundation Africa, we recognize the importance of integrating such transformative innovations into Nigeria’s health ecosystem. This vision aligns closely with our ongoing programmes, including the Advanced Obstetric Surgical Skills Training under the Global Health Workforce Programme, through which we have already trained 266 obstetricians and gynaecologists across the country’s six geopolitical zones. By equipping specialists with advanced expertise, the initiative has contributed significantly to reducing maternal and newborn mortality. Alongside this, our MamaCare360 programme continues to harness the power of digital health, offering mothers round-the-clock education, counselling, and real-time support through our network of nurses and midwives. By embracing technology-driven solutions, we ensure that care is not confined to clinical settings but extends into homes and communities.
