The UK-Africa Health Summit 2025, held on 18th–19th March 2025 at the Royal College of Physicians in London, brought together leaders, policymakers, and frontline health professionals from Africa and the UK. Hosted by Global Health Partnerships (formerly THET), this landmark summit served as an important platform to address some of the most pressing global health challenges.
Building Stronger Health Partnerships
Discussions focused on deepening UK-Africa collaborations to address urgent health priorities, the important role of diaspora health professionals in shaping the future of healthcare, and strategies to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR), workforce migration, and non-communicable diseases (NCDs). These conversations echoed the shared commitment to building resilient and equitable health systems through sustained partnerships.
The Impact of the Global Health Workforce Programme (GHWP)
A key highlight of the summit was its alignment with the Global Health Workforce Programme (GHWP) 2024, funded by the UK Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC). Led by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine in partnership with the Wellbeing Foundation Africa, the programme has played a pivotal role in strengthening healthcare delivery in Nigeria—particularly through the implementation of the Advanced Obstetrics and Surgical Skills (AOSS) Course.
To date, the initiative has successfully trained 225 healthcare workers across Abuja, Lagos, Kano, and Enugu, as well as at the SOGON Conference in Uyo. It has also established two Centres of Excellence: one at Lagos University Teaching Hospital and another at Federal Medical Centre, Jabi. Furthermore, the AOSS course has been integrated into the curriculum of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, securing long-term impact for medical education and maternal care in the country.
