The Wellbeing Foundation Africa partnered with Reckitt-Dettol Nigeria, in 2022, to introduce the WBFA-Dettol Nigeria Hygiene Quest program aiming to enhance access to water and sanitation across three target states - Lagos, Abuja and Kwara.

Enhance Hygiene and Sanitation for 6 Million School Children by 2025

The Wellbeing Foundation Africa partnered with Reckitt-Dettol Nigeria, in 2022, to introduce the WBFA-Dettol Nigeria Hygiene Quest program aiming to enhance access to water and sanitation across three target states - Lagos, Abuja and Kwara. Dettol Hygiene Quest's core objective is to educate, empower and inspire 6 million school children, instilling healthy hygiene habits. By 2025, it aims to increase handwashing rates by 20%, decrease diarrhea cases by 10%, and reduce absenteeism by 10%, thereby positively impacting the overall well-being, education and development of children for generations to come.

Collaboration, Hygiene & Wellbeing

Our partnership facilitates a dynamic and timely collaboration between Reckitt’s Dettol Hygiene Quest curriculum and the Wellbeing Foundation Africa's ongoing Personal Social Hygiene Education (PSHE)/WASH curriculum, operational in schools and communities for adolescents since 2018. Furthermore, leveraging the existing WBFA structure, the program extends its reach to communities and healthcare facilities as well. To achieve this, Reckitt’s Dettol Hygiene Quest curriculum is seamlessly integrated into the WBFA’s Mother and Baby Handbook, utilized within MamaCare360 antenatal and postnatal education program. This integration ensures timely delivery of health education and behavioral interventions, thereby promoting lasting enhancements in hygiene practices among expectant mothers.

Hygiene Education Across Schools, Communities, and Healthcare Facilities

This partnership is anchored on core pillars that maximize the unique and collective strengths of Reckitt and WBFA. These pillars include the expansion of Hygiene Quest in schools by leveraging WBFA’s existing WASH in Schools program, extending Hygiene Quest to communities through WBFA’s WASH in Communities initiative, and incorporating Hygiene Quest into healthcare facilities via WBFA’s MamaCare360 program. Additionally, the partnership emphasizes national and state-level advocacy for the full integration of Hygiene Quest and other WASH-related advocacy initiatives.

Phase 1 of the WBFA-Dettol Nigeria Hygiene Quest program, implemented in schools, communities, and healthcare facilities across Lagos, Kwara, and Abuja, concluded in July 2023. Building upon this success, we have initiated Phase 2 of the program, aiming to engage over 300,000 individuals—comprising school students, community members, and pregnant and lactating mothers—within a span of two years.

Impact of Phase One

Through Phase-1 of the Dettol Hygiene Quest program, implemented across Abuja, Lagos and Kwara, the program successfully engaged 43,284 individuals.

9321 students were reached across 96 schools, achieving a good gender parity with 52.0% girls and 48.0% boys, thereby contributing to the reduction of the gender gap commonly observed in educational settings.

25,835 expectant mothers and mothers actively participated in Hygiene Quest sessions conducted across 36 healthcare facilities through 487 visits.

8,128 community members, with a focus on women, engaged in the program across 96 communities during community WASH sessions.
